Researchers Left Claude AI Agents on a Virtual Island. They Started to "Play"

When AI agents are given no tasks, they behave like a game, as in movies about a lone hero on an island.

What the researchers did

The researchers placed AI agents in a virtual desert on an island several times. Each time, the agents were left there alone for 30 hours. The experiment is reminiscent of the films Cast Away and Home Alone.

The agents were copies of the Claude Opus 4.7 model. The researchers called them Eko.

Why it's interesting

The main question of the experiment: what do AI agents do when they are not told anything to do? The answer turned out to be similar to a game. This helps us better understand how such systems behave without clear instructions.

A full description of what the agents did on the island is available in the original MIT Technology Review article.
