What happened

Google has expanded its News AI pilot program. It now includes more than 400 publications worldwide. The program launched last year with a small group of partners, including The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post.

The company says people's news habits are changing quickly, and publishers and platforms have to change with them.

Who joined

The newest partners include major international outlets such as Axios, CNN, the Financial Times and Forbes. There are also local U.S. publishers, including Post and Courier, Texas Tribune, Oil City News and Shaw Media.

How it works

Under the program, Google licenses content and pays participating publications for using it to build new AI features. Examples include in-depth article overviews on publisher pages in Google News, which help readers understand a topic before they click, and customizable audio news briefings.

Google says these features always include clear attribution and direct links to the original article, so readers can more easily find the outlets they trust.
