What the project is

Meta, the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery in Milan and EssilorLuxottica have launched a pilot project called "Sensing Art — Discovering Masterpieces Beyond What Meets the Eye". Its goal is to explore how AI glasses can make art more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision.

The project is run together with leading Italian organizations supporting people with sight loss: Associazione Nazionale Subvedenti (ANS), Unione Italiana dei Ciechi e degli Ipovedenti (UICI) and Fondazione Istituto dei Ciechi di Milano. The glasses were developed by Meta and EssilorLuxottica.

Why it matters

More than one million people in Italy are blind or visually impaired, and access to art and culture is often a challenge for them. The Brera gallery will be one of the first museums in the world to use such AI glasses to improve the visit experience for blind and visually impaired people.

It is one of the few examples of new technology being used specifically to make culture more accessible to everyone.
