How Artificial Intelligence Differs from Superintelligence
In simple terms, we explain what is currently considered AI and what is so far only a hypothetical superintelligence.
What AI Is Today
Artificial intelligence (AI) is computer programs that can perform tasks that previously required skilled human work. This can be translating text, recognizing a face in a photo, suggesting how to write a letter, or searching for needed information.
Most such systems are built for specific tasks. They can be very useful, but they do not understand the world as broadly as a human does.
What Superintelligence Is
Superintelligence is a hypothetical AI that would far surpass humans in virtually all areas: science, creativity, planning, and social skills. So far, it does not exist, and scientists debate when, or whether, it will appear at all.
That is why the topic of superintelligence is often discussed in the context of safety: experts think about how to control such systems if they ever emerge.
The Main Difference
Ordinary AI is narrow: it does certain things well but cannot do everything. Superintelligence would be broad and surpass humans in most tasks. The first already exists in our phones and apps, while the second remains a matter of speculation and discussion.
